Peter Copithorne, M.D.Orthopedic Surgeon

Dual Fellowship-trained in Arthroplasty & Trauma

Dr. Peter Copithorne is an arthroplasty and trauma orthopedic surgeon with a unique background as a civil engineer. With his diverse skill set and expertise in both orthopedics and engineering, Dr. Copithorne brings a fresh perspective to the field of orthopedic surgery, offering innovative solutions for patients with joint conditions.

Dr. Copithorne's journey into medicine began with a passion for understanding the intricate mechanics of structures, as he pursued a degree in civil engineering. His engineering background provided him with a solid foundation in biomechanics, materials science, and problem-solving skills, which he now applies to the field of orthopedics.

After completing his engineering studies, Dr. Copithorne's unwavering fascination with the human body led him to pursue a career in medicine. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Calgary and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Dalhousie University, where he honed his surgical skills and developed a deep understanding of musculoskeletal conditions. He then pursued further specialization and completed a Trauma Fellowship in London, Ontario and an Arthroplasty Fellowship (Hip and Knee Replacements) in Kingston, Ontario under Drs. John Rudan and Garvin Wood.

Dr. Copithorne is committed to continual education and is always looking at ways to improve his surgical techniques and outcomes based on the latest research. He learned the minimally invasive anterolateral approach for hip under Dr. George Babikian. This muscle sparing approach to hip replacements offers patients earlier recovery, less post operative pain and allows for early return to function.

Dr. Copithorne's unique combination of expertise in engineering and orthopedic surgery allows him to approach joint conditions with a multidimensional perspective. He uses his engineering knowledge to analyze joint mechanics, optimize implant selection, and develop surgical techniques that provide the best possible outcomes for his patients.

With a patient-centered approach, Dr. Copithorne takes the time to understand each patient's individual needs and tailors his treatment plans accordingly. He is committed to using the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery, including minimally invasive techniques, robotic-assisted surgery, to provide the most effective and least invasive treatments for his patients.

As a leading expert in arthroplasty, Dr. Copithorne specializes in joint replacement surgeries, including hip and knee replacements. He has a reputation for delivering exceptional results, exceptionally low infection rates and high patient satisfaction scores, that help patients regain mobility, alleviate pain, and improve their quality of life.
